George Samuel Garbisch

Samuel Garbisch was born Jan 19, 1842 in Freistadt, WI.
He entered Addison Teachers College (now Concordia College) at the age of 16,
graduating in three years. In 1862, after graduating Samuel went to
teach at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran School in Elk Grove, IL.
Samuel met Johanna Marie Simon while at a teachers conference in Milwaukee, WI.
He was staying with Rev. Steinbach and met a girl named Johanna Marie Simon
(Simeon), the couple would marry on May 2, 1864. Samuel and Johanna
moved to Elk Grove, IL where he taught in the Lutheran Parochial school.
The couple had ten children Johanna, Henry, Emma, Herman, Jacob, Engel,
Magdalena, Amalie, Paul and Alvin, Emma, Jacob and Engel died before adulthood. In 1870, Samuel accepted
a call to Springfield, IL to teach at Trinity Lutheran School. He
taught in Springfield for two and one half years during which time he got
sick with tuberculosis which forced him to resign. Samuel Garbisch
returned to Elk Grove where he taught for almost 35 years and resigned in 1900
due to failing health. Samuel Garbisch died on June 5, 1901 in Elk
Grove, IL.
