Luther Fisher

Luther Fisher was born in Germany in the year 1832. His parents were John G. Fisher and Margaret (?)    Luther had a brother Adolph.   The story from family members is that Luther arrived in America from Hanover, Germany with his brother Adolph, he was a carpenter by trade.   When men from the Hudson and River Falls area of Wisconsin were called to duty during the Civil War, Luther took the place of a man from the area and joined the US army in 1861.   For payment he was given some money and a horse.   He served with the 2nd Wisconsin Calvary Co. D.   Luther mustered out in Missouri in 1865 he returned to the Hudson, WI area where he met and married Elizabeth Mispagel on July 20, 1867.  Luther and Elizabeth were very poor, they lived on a small farm outside of Hudson.   Luther did carpenter work and she did most of the farm work.   They had thirteen children, only four lived to adulthood, William, Joseph, Augusta and Susannah.   The other children are buried in unmarked graves in the Old Willow River Cemetery in Hudson, WI.      Luther was never in good health, suffering from dysentery and other complications from the war.  He died April 19, 1886 in Hudson, WI and was buried in the old Willow River Cemetery.   About 1910, Elizabeth bought cemetery lots in the new cemetery and had his remains reburied.   A Civil War marker marks his grave.
