Johanna Marie Simon was born June 26, 1842 New York.
Her father was a sea captain on a large ship. Her family moved from
Brooklyn, NY to Milwaukee, WI where Johanna worked for a Lutheran minister, the Rev.
Steinbach and where she met Samuel Garbisch when he was in Milwaukee on a
teachers conference. Samuel and Johanna were married May 2, 1864,
and they would have ten children, Johanna, Henry, Emma, Herman, Jacob, Engel,
Magdalena, Amalie, Paul and Alvin (Emma, Jacob and Engel died before adulthood).
Samuel Garbisch died June 5th, 1901 in Elk Grove, IL. After Samuels
death Johanna lived with her
daughter Amalie and son-in-law John Zitzmann in Milwaukee until her death Sept 18, 1919.
