Elizabeth
Mispagel was born April 6, 1845 in Hildeshiem, Lower Saxony, Germany.
She had two older brothers, Wilhelm and Augustus, and two older sisters
Magdalena and Marie. Elizabeth was about six years old when her
mother died, her sister Marie would help to take care of her and they both
helped with the chores of cooking, cleaning, etc. Her father re-married several years later, Elizabeth loved her new mother and had several
years of a "normal" childhood, but her father would died when she was about
eleven. Her step-mother was unable to care for Elizabeth and she and
her sister Marie went to live with their Uncle who was a priest in a nearby
town. After several years her brothers and sister who had emigrated
to America sent for Elizabeth and Marie, the girls would be able to help in the
Hotel they owned in New York. The girls would also be able to help
their sister Magdalena with her new
baby.
Elizabeth and Mary sailed from the port of Bremen aboard the
ship "Union" they arrived in Castle Garden, New York on Sept. 6, 1858.
Elizabeth and Mary lived with their brothers Wilhelm and Augustus.
Mary married, Charles F. Wagner and continued to live in the New York and New Jersey
area. Elizabeth traveled with her brother August and his wife Anna
to Hudson, WI around 1862. Elizabeth met her future husband Luther
Fisher and they married on July 20, 1867 in Hudson. They had a total
of thirteen children but only four survived to adulthood. Luther
died April 19, 1886 leaving Elizabeth alone to raise the children William 17, Joseph 13,
Augusta "Gussie" 8 and
Suzanne 4. Elizabeth loved to garden and to survive she
would send her sons in to town with vegetables to sell. In 1890, she
was able to collect a small widows civil war pension, and this also helped.
Elizabeth continued to live in the town of Hudson, WI until 1930 when she went
to live with her granddaughter Georgia in Minneapolis until her death on March
29, 1936.
